Ben Horowitz - Why Startups Should Train Their People
I’ll add another reason. Training is a major point of differentiation in recruiting. Wall Street/Consulting hype the hell out of their training programs because people don’t just want to learn, they want to be taught. A startup can’t match the formal programs offered by a GS or McK, but a strong apprenticeship program is always within reach. And where a single startup may lack the funds or scale to put together a classroom training program, the startup community can band together to offer a more formal curricula (for example: Charlie O’Donnell’s product manager school and Startup Weekend NYC). It’s all a part of seeding the startup culture—storytelling, connecting, apprenticing and training. It’s all possible.
