I remember rocking out to this song at hebrew school. Obviously.

Temple of the Dog - “Hunger Strike”
Temple of the Dog, 1991

As anyone who was old enough to tie their own Doc Martens in 1991 knows, Chris Cornell formed this Seattle supergroup as a tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood who, to put it in junkie terms, “rode the horse all the way to the finish line”* in 1990. Because this song involves four people who would soon become Pearl Jam, you can hear very clearly the hints of their sound in this song. You can also, if you listen very closely, hear the strains of the easy listening, adult contemporary band that Pearl Jam is today.

If you’re like me, you bought this tape expecting to hear a lot more Eddie Vedder.

* - May not actually be an official junkie term for dying of a heroin overdose.
