Tumblr is website Legos
The Premium area of the tumblr theme garden is hatching some really cool stuff. Developers (well, at least one) have taken to the modularity of the platform and the ideas I’ve seen in this first week are pretty stellar. What interests me most are the use-case based themes developed by tmblg (which I think is acme design) They pretty well approximate (or replace) a fully developed, multimedia website for far less than it would cost to hire a developer. Check out:
- Sonic - made for bands (no, this isn’t the real She & Him site)
- Simplefolio - geared towards designers/artists
Tumblr is basically website Legos. What’s so cool to me is that tmblg has taken a powerful, modular blogging platform and used it as the backbone for customizable, interactive websites. I love when people use great tools in unexpected (at least to me) and interesting ways.
