Want to design the next great software tool?  I’d recommend two books before diving in:

1) The Design of Everyday Things - make it intuitive

2) Dreaming in Code - realize that mirroring intuition with software is really damn hard

Or, just play with Lotus Notes’ email client for five minutes, and then do the exact opposite.

[Side question: I know Lotus is massive in the enterprise email space, but the email client is so laughably bad, it almost feels like rent-seeking.  Unless IBM fixes that UI, Google or some other SaaS vendor is going to eat Lotus alive, don’t you think?]
